It’s always important to keep challenging yourself and to keep learning as a wedding photographer. That’s why in October 2011 I attended a wedding photography workshop in Birmingham run by Steve Gerrard (yes he’s heard all the gags). After a morning of chat about workflows and getting clients we went out to shoot some pictures as you might do on an engagement shoot. This is what came out of the camera…

A Liverpool Wedding – Kate and Stephen

I met Kate through Twitter. We got chatting and she started telling me about her wedding and her wedding photography. What she told me was that they were thinking of not having any.

Now, hearing something like that always gets to me. Maybe I’m a big softy but I think it’s heartbreaking if people are thinking about not having some professional wedding photography of the biggest day of their life. The good thing is though that because we had built up a relationship already we talked about the wedding photography prices and worked out something that was affordable for her. Together I think we’ve done a great job.

This is what Kate and Stephen thought…

“We were delighted that Matt agreed to shoot our wedding on very short notice and in deepest, darkest January. To make the job a little more challenging we got married at dusk, the venue was small and it was far too cold to go outside for photographs. Despite the conditions, Matt has produced a collection of beautiful, warm photographs that have impressed all of our friends and family. His informal approach complemented our small gathering and his friendly demeanour made everyone feel at ease (even the cheeky children). It was a real pleasure to have Matt at our wedding and we’re simply thrilled with the end result.”

Lake District Wedding Photographer – Teacups and Pearls Pearls

Similarly to the Cotswolds, the Lake District is another place which lends itself to beautiful wedding photography.

There are many talented people in the area who love weddings and I met one of them at Roundthorn Country House in Penrith for this particular Lake District wedding photography session.

They’ve just got into the business and you’ll find them on Facebook. I love what they’re doing and I hope you do too.

Wintry Cheshire Engagement Photography – Rachel and Sam

You’ve got to admire Rachel, she turned up to this engagement shoot at The DoubleTree by Hilton in Chester wearing the thinest dress I have ever seen. Now that would be fine if this were August and the sun was shining, but it was December, it had been snowing and it was absolutely freezing.

There was I fully wrapped up in body warmer and hat and Rachel and Sam were very bravely posing for their engagement photography in sub zero temperatures.

It was worth it though I think and I didn’t make them stand outside for too long. In fact most of this engagement photography was done inside the DoubleTree which is where Rachel and Sam are getting married in August.

Hopefully the temperature will be somewhat warmer in August where Rachel and Sam hope to use the gardens of the hotel for games and I’ll also be doing a fun photo booth for them. I’ve already got them some great props which I think they’re gonna love.

Cotswolds Wedding Photographer – Location Scouting

As a UK Wedding Photographer I’m always on the look out for places and locations that would make amazing locations for wedding photography.

I’d never been to the Cotswolds before so in October 2011 I pitched my tent, grabbed my camera and got on my bike to go exploring.

The places I visited included Lower Slaughter, Upper Slaughter and Bourton-on-the-Water and I wasn’t disappointed. They’re all beautiful towns and villages and it would be brilliant to do some wedding photography around the Cotswolds.

You might recognise one of the locations as one of the places Julie Walters is standing when she’s pretending to be in the Lakes on the recent Visit England adverts.

The lovely warm sun reflecting off the Cotswold stone creates perfect light for wedding photography and I hope to be back in the Cotswolds soon.

A sunny Cheshire engagement photography session – Jenny and Mark – Knutsford

Mark and Jenny are getting married in September this year and I can’t wait to do their wedding photography, especially after this engagement shoot – they are naturals in front of the camera.

They’re getting married in Grappenhall in Cheshire but we did the engagement photography in Knutsford as that is where they met when they were both working for Travelbag.

Engagement photography is a great way of getting to know the couple before the actual wedding day. Mark and Jenny were so relaxed during this shoot that their wedding photography should be an absolute joy.

A Beautiful Cheshire Wedding – Sarah and Ed – Hillbark Hotel

Sarah and Ed had a very traditional wedding and that’s reflected in the traditional wedding photography in this particular blog entry. They’re such a great couple it was such fun to photograph their wedding. They’re super relaxed and all the guests were up for a great party. Sarah was worried the weather would ruin the day but it turned out to be a scorcher of an August day.

The reception venue, Hillbark Hotel, is beautiful and because of the gorgeous weather everyone was able to have drinks outside while being entertained by a saxophone player.

I loved shooting this wedding and I love Sarah and Ed.

Mike and Cheryl – Wedding – Liverpool

Mike and Cheryl were actually married in 2010 but a year later they asked me to help them with their wedding photographs. Cheryl didn’t feel like she had got the images she wanted from the photographer who did their original photographs so wanted some more. Her and Mike got dressed in their finest again and went to St. George’s Hall in Liverpool where they had got married.

She was very happy with the photographs from this shoot.

Aileen and Ian – Engagement Shoot – Dunham Massey

Cheshire has some beautiful locations for wedding and engagement photography and it’s a great joy in discovering them all. Dunham Massey is a National Trust Property near Altrincham with a grand house and huge estate. When Aileen and Ian asked me to do their engagement photography it seemed like the perfect spot.

Aileen loves all things vintage and loves collecting old tea cups and other such trinkets so I thought getting hold of this old record player and picnic set would work really well, especially as Ian is more into music than tea cups.

The weather was beautiful, there was a lovely warm wind coming across the grass and there were lots of smiles.
